The device (2) proposed consists of a condenser (CS) connected in parallel with a series-connected circuit (22), made up of at least one choke (LP) and a switch (26), plus a control circuit (24) designed to generate a control signal for the switch (26), the condenser (CS) being electrically connected in series with one branch of the network and measurements of the condenser voltage (UCK) and current (IK) being fed to the input side of the control circuit (24). This device (2) enables a short-circuit current in the network to be limited without increasing the idling power or affecting the load current under normal operating conditions.
