Process comprises treatment of ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces either before or after welding, in partic., laser-beam welding. Accordingly either mechanical vibrations are introduced into the material in front of the advancing weld seam to increase the strength of the material or they are introduced into the material after the welding process to influence the solidification kinetics of the material. The appts. incorporates a punch (8) which is mounted on a heavy mass (10) in a guide unit (3) either in front or behind the welding head (13, 6). The punch contacting appropriate surface areas of the workpiece is brought into motion by means of a piezoelectric oscillator.
