The separate motor drive for the shaftless rotor of an open end spinner has a monitor (20,20") to detect a fault in the gas supply for the gas cushion, and a system (22,28,29), to brake the rotor (25). On detection of a gas fault, a switch (27) connects the braking system (22,28,29) to the current supply for the stator (3) and it is set the retard the rotor (26) and slow its speed to a level where there is no damage to the bearing surfaces on the collapse of the gas cushion.
