Vertebrate cells are treated with an expression vector that comprises code sequences for both a desired protein and a secondary protein whose presence is required for the growth of the host cells under the selective culturing conditions. Both code sequences are operably connected with the same promoter sequence but separately from the translation stop and start codons. The cells are cultured under selective culturing conditions for the selection of transfixed cells. <IMAGE>
