With the proposed vena cava thrombus filter, which has a catheter (10) for insertion in a vein (40), it is possible advantageously to filter out dissolving thrombi or fragments thereof from the blood stream during thrombolysis, thrombectomy or in cases of high-risk pregnancy, in order to pre-empt any risk of pulmonary embolism. According to the invention, the catheter (10) is a thin tube made of flexible plastic inside which a guide- and securing cable (20) can slide axially. The handling end (21) of the cable has a grip (22) and the insertion end (23) has a filter element (30) consisting of thin wires (31) which can be expanded elastically inside a vein and which when pushed forward out of the catheter insertion end form a liquid-permeable basket (30).
