PURPOSE: To prevent the inadvertent deployment of an air bag mounted in a door. CONSTITUTION: An air bag 16 is mounted in the door of a vehicle, and an accelerometer 30 for measuring the sideways acceleration of the door is fitted. A controller 20 monitors the output of the accelerometer 30 and determines whether the door is in a door opening event or whether the vehicle is in a sideways crash condition. The controller 20 expands the air bag if a vehicle crash condition is detected and prohibits the expansion of the air bag if the door of the vehicle is judged to be opening. Since the opening state of the door can be monitored, the erroneous operation of the air bag mounted in the door due to the opening of the door can be prevented.
