An aq. protective colloid-stabilised acrylate dispersion is claimed which is obtd. by emulsion polymerisation of olefinically unsatd. monomers in the disperse phase using an oil-soluble free radical initiator and a water-soluble reducing agent at 40-90 degrees C without addn. of water-soluble regulators, the process being claimed per se and the ingredients being, by wt.: (1) a monomer mixt. consisting of (a) 40-99.9% 1-18C alkyl (meth)acrylates; (b) 0.1-10% olefinically unsatd. carboxylic acid wholly or partially neutralised before the polymerisation; and opt. (c) up to 40% olefinic comonomers; and/or (d) up to 10% olefinic comonomers with functional gps.; and (2) a mixt. comprising, based on total monomer wt., of (a) 0.5-10% PVA; (b) 0.05-2% hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC); and opt. (c) up to 0.2% anionic and/or nonionic emulsifier. |
