PURPOSE:To greatly improve the visual field angle of a TN type liquid crystal display cell by applying a layer contg. discotic liquid crystals onto a transparent film by means of a slide coater having an angle of inclination of a specific range. CONSTITUTION:The layer contg. the discotic liquid crystals are applied to the transparent film by means of the slide coater having an angle of inclination 0 to 9 deg.. Namely, the uniform application of a coating liquid contg. the discotic liquid crystals which is a low-viscosity liquid is attained by applying the coating liquid to the film by means of the slide coater having an angle of the inclination 0 to 9 deg.. An optically anisotropic element RF 1 of which the retardation attains the min. value in a direction inclined from the normal direction of the liquid crystal cell is arranged between, for example, a polarizing plate A and the liquid crystal cell TNC. This optically anisotropic element RF 1 is a double refractive body having the phase difference increasing with an increase in the incident angle of light on the direction thereof. The optically anisotropic element RF 2 having the optical characteristics similar to the optical characteristics of the optically anisotropic element RF 1 is arranged between the polarizing plate B and the liquid crystal cell TNC. As a result, the degradation in the contrast in diagonal incidence is prevented. |
