PURPOSE:To restore the refractive index of the worked layer of an optical fiber end face to an intrinsic value of the optical fibers without executing diagonal polishing and to substantially eliminate reflection at the joint surfaces of optical fibers by locally and rapidly heating only the part of the optical fiber cores to affect a light transmission characteristic at the optical fiber end face after polishing by using a carbon dioxide laser. CONSTITUTION:A shutter 5 is first closed and in this state, the carbon dioxide laser 1 is kept operated. After the end faces of a connector ferrule 6 subjected to PC polishing or APC polishing are washed together with the optical fibers 7-1, 7-2, the connector ferrule 6 is mounted at a connector ferrule holder 8. The shutter 5 is thereafter opened for the specified period of time under the operating state of the carbon dioxide laser 1 and the core part of the end face of the optical fiber 7-1 is irradiated with the laser beam 2. As a result, the core part at the end face of the optical fiber 7-1 is temporarily softened and the intrinsic properties of the optical fibers are restored after the core part is cooled again. |
