The appts. comprises a laser unit (1) and a processing module (7) for forming a jet of liq. (12) and combining it with a laser beam emerging from a focussing unit (21,25). The liq. chosen has a sufficiently low coefft. of radiation absorption and/or its flow velocity in the beam direction, in the beam path, close to the point of the focussing cone- is sufficiently high to suppress formation of a thermal lens and prevent a substantial portion of radiation reaching the nozzle walls.
