The stacking device comprises a feeding mechanism (4) which delivers the flat articles (1) one after the other. A transfer wheel (5) has a number of recesses (8) capable of receiving one product per recess. The articles are transferred tangentially to the rotating wheel and then placed in a line (12) running radially to the path of rotation. Each article is displaced from its recess with the broadside foremost so as to build up a stack (15).
