A method of sensing the edge of a planar object (10), wherein said edge is illuminated and an image of the edge is continuously registered by an electronic camera (12), the optical axis of which is directed at a first angle ( alpha ) toward the edge. A line (16) on the edge is illuminated by lighting means (11), whose light is directed toward the edge at a second angle ( beta ).
