An aqueous composition is described, which is characterised in that it comprises a water-soluble electrolyte complex containing a combination of a water-soluble, anionic polyelectrolyte with hydrophobic groups having 6-30 carbon atoms, and a water-soluble cationic polyelectrolyte with hydrophobic groups having 6-30 carbon atoms. The polyelectrolyte composition can be used as thickening agent in water-based systems, such as paints, coating slips, cosmetics or cleaning compositions, and as water-binding agent in sanitary products, e.g. nappies, sanitary towels and the like. |
