PURPOSE: To obtain a uniform and high-density ceramic coated fiber by electrochemically depositing a metal hydride material on an electric conductive fiber core with an electrophoretic method and then changing the hydride to a metal oxide by drying. CONSTITUTION: This method for producing a ceramic fiber is provided by housing a sol 10 containing a metal hydride having <=150Å, preferably 10-15Åparticle size selected from an aluminum hydride, yttrium hydride and their mixture with an alcohol having 50-70 molecular ratio in a sol vessel 12, feeding an electric conductive fiber core 16 consisting of a group of a carbon, glass, silicone carbide and silicon nitride, Al, Fe, Ni, Ta, Ti, W, Nb and their alloy from a spool body 18, also charging direct potential of 0.1-100 v, preferably 1-50 v and more preferably 35-50 v between the fiber core 16 and a cathode 26 to electrochemically deposit the metal hydride to increase more than the diameter of the fiber core 16 by an electrophoresis and also remove the co- generated hydrogen gas, then heating for drying at least at >=850 deg.F in an oven 28 to change the hydride to a metal oxide and winding up on a spool 32 to obtain the ceramic fiber.
