The method for controlling a variable length decoding device comprises the steps of: adaptively controlling a variable length decoding unit according to the type of a decoded block pattern, inserting one cycle between a falling edge of a coded block pattern selection signal and a rising edge of a pixel coefficient chip selection signal by a variable length decoding controller and supplying it to the variable length decoding unit; and if CBP is "0", generating no hold signal from the start to the end of one block, and if CBP is "1", generating a hold signal to the variable length decoding unit to make the data processing time of each block equal.
