An assembly which treats air has a housing (5) incorporating an air passage (12) with an ionisation assembly (1) and electrodes (33) to which different voltages may be applied. The assembly also incorporates a separation unit (21) removing ionised particles and a catalytic converter (23). The improvement is that one or both electrodes (33) are mfd. from ultra-fine wire of less than 0.5 mm diameter; and that the assembly incorporates an electrode protection assembly which prevents a torn or loose electrode wire (38) coming into contact with the other electrode (33); and that the electrode (38) surface is etch-roughened.
