Even when a video signal with a different aspect ratio from that of the screen is inputted, optimum picture information is detected in the picture area excluding the upper and lower or the right and left side black band area on the screen. A picture information detecting apparatus for a video signal includes a picture area signal output circuit which detects a picture area excluding black band portions from the video input signal and outputs a picture area signal to designate the picture area in which picture information is detected, a picture information detecting circuit for detecting picture information from the video input signal in the area designated by the picture area signal, a picture quality compensating circuit for compensating the video input signal by the detected picture information and outputting the gradation compensated vido signal, and an EDTV 2 discriminating circuit for discriminating if the video input signal is an EDTV 2 signal or not. |
