An ion flow sensor (5) detects ionisation in the cylinder during combustion and, dependent of the extent of ionisation, produces an ion flow signal for an ion flow signal receiving device (40-44) and from which a first crankshaft angle in connection with top dead centre (TDC) forward to another crankshaft angle at least 40 degrees later than the first, with integration in an integrator of the ion flow signal produced during combustion and which produces an integrated actual value of the ion flow signal from each combustion. A pinking sensor detects pinking from the combustion process and in proportion to the pinking intensity produces an actual pinking signal from each combustion event. A signal correcting circuit reduces the integrated actual value of the ion flow signals dependent upon the intensity of the pinking signal. A control unit (10) continuously varies at least one regulating parameter in accordance with a regulating algorithm stored in a memory. This algorithm maximises the corrected integrated actual value of the ion flow signals. |
