The tag (8) and/or at least one link (9-12) of each round steel chain (5) are coated in at least one part with a paint which irreversibly changes colour depending on the temp. affecting it. The tag and/or the coated links are in the load-bearing part of the round steel chain. The chains consist of sections (5a,b,c) each joined by a lock (6,7) at least one of which has a coated or tagged link.
