PURPOSE:To improve toughness of polymer-coated glass fibers, by coating glass fibers having a specific graft active site with a polymer containing one or more functional groups of epoxy, carboxyl, amide and amino groups and having a prescribed glass transition point. CONSTITUTION:Glass fibers having <=7mm fiber length and >=5 aspect ratio are immersed in a solution of one or more compounds selected from an alkoxysilane, an epoxy compound, an acid anhydride, etc., reacted and then heat-treated to prepare glass fibers having one or more graft active sites of methacryl group, allyl group, mercapto group, etc. Then 100 pts.wt. of the treated glass fibers is suspended in water and reacted with 0.1-100 pts.wt. of one or more vinyl monomers selected from methyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, etc., and a proper amount of a polymerization initiator such as cumene hydroperoxide by dripping the monomers and the polymerization initiator. Then the reaction product is washed with water and dried by heating to give glass fibers coated with the polymer having >=40 deg.C glass transition temperature. |
