The prodn. of combustible gases, esp. methane, by degradation of organic material such as slaughter-house waste, comprises: (a) heating the material to a temp. which promotes the growth of thermophilic bacteria; (b) filling a sepn. vessel with the solid degradation prods.; the gaseous prods. being added at the vessel base, and heating to a temp. lower than that in (a) in order to promote degradation by mesophilic bacteria to form combustible gases; and (c) returning some of the material formed in (b) to the vessel used for (a) to ensure a constant flow of bacteria culture specially suited for the substrate. An appts. for carrying out the process is also claimed.
