PURPOSE:To remarkably shorten a reactive current period not contributing to light emission by providing a wave generator, and driving a discharge tube, using drive current waves provided with rectangular surge waveforms on the level more than the threshold of light emission. CONSTITUTION:A wave generator 47 drives a discharge tube 5 through switching transistors 27 and 28, a high-voltage transformer 31, etc., by generating waveforms A and B each of which has a rectangular surge waveform 42 on the level above the threshold of light emission of a discharge tube 5 and a subsequent sine waveform 43 alternately The timing of light emission is quickened by this surge waveform 42, and the reactive current period is shortened remarkably to minimum. As a result, the discharge tube is driven with high efficiency, and the discharge tube is surely lit even at driving with low power consumption. |
