The fluid i.e. CO2, or possibly N2, SF6 or N2O (3) circulates through pressure pipes (8) between an engine-driven compressor (4), a condenser (5), an expansion valve (7) and an evaporator (6). Branch pipes (9) contg. solenoid valves (11) lead to nozzles (10) directed at points in the engine compartment where fire may break out. The valves are opened by an electronic control unit (13) linked to crash sensors (14) such as those of an occupant restraint (air bag or seat belt) activation system, and detectors (15) of mechanical damage, excess pressure or leakage in the air-conditioning circuit itself. <IMAGE> |
