A silencer (1) for large-calibre weapons is arranged separate from the weapon barrel (4) but positioned adjacent the muzzle. The silencer comprises a tubular hollow body into which the barrel (4) partially projects through a front face wall (20). The silencer has a vessel of boiler-shape (5) which may be made up of at least two modules (6, 7, 8). A separate damper insert on which the sound-absorbing material (9 to 14) is arranged is located in each module (6, 7, 8). For use with weapon systems with muzzle brakes, further modules may be arranged laterally so that the secondary gases generated by the muzzle brake are absorbed separately. <IMAGE>
