A cutting insert for use in a cutting tool has upper (2), lower (3) and side surfaces (4) and at least one cutting edge (10) formed at an intersection of the upper surface with the side surface thereof. A rake face (13) of the insert is formed with an undulated chip forming groove (15) extending along the cutting edge (10) and comprising a succession of alternating depressed (20) and raised portions (21). Each portion of the chip forming groove (15) is formed with a truncated top portion (22) of a width which is substantially less than a distance between two adjacent truncated top portions. The depressed (20) and raised portions (21) preferably extend in the direction perpendicular to the cutting edge (10), along the entire width of the chip forming groove. |
