Cleaning dirty fluids by capillary action

A closed casing contains a capillary packing supplied with dirty water from below. This is carried up and over into the downcomer to be discharged at a low lever. Once filled by pump assistance, this system flows independently, siphoning under gravity. A backwashing process for the packing is initiated by opening the air valve. This is operated by the float valve; which detects rising level as the flow resistance of the packing increases due to blockage by dirt. Opening this valve breaks the suction, allowing reverse flow through the packing, closing the supply NRV, or non-return valve and opening the dirty water channel NRV.
