A deceleration sensor for the operation of the inflator of a vehicle air bag can be disabled for safety, can be armed, when it will be triggered by excessive deceleration, and can be set off intentionally. The sensor has an inertial mass 40 which moves in the direction B and, through arms 42 and 50B, rotates a trigger lever 50 to release a firing pin 30. A plate 80 controls the position of a projection 66 engaging in a slot of arm 42. The position of plate 80 is controlled by a rod 86 such that with the rod absent the mass 40 cannot release the firing pin 30, with the thin part of the rod inserted the sensor is armed and with the thicker part of the rod inserted the projection 66 pulls arm 42 and so releases the firing pin. In alternative constructions a wire is fused electrically to allow intentional operation and the control plate may be rotatable to control the sensor. <IMAGE>
