The windscreen wiper arm (12) carries the wiper blade and is mounted so as to pivot around the drive axis (X-X) of the drive head (20). It carries a spring (38), acting between the wiper arm and the drive head, to apply a force through a line of action (D), which does not pass through the pivot axis (X-X), so that it applies a cleaning pressure to the wiper arm. A mechanical transmission mechanism (64) is provided to vary the value of the cleaning couple by changing the distance (d) between the line of action (D) and the pivot axis. The mechanism has a crank arm (62), which is moved about a pivot (66), by means of a face cam activator (86), which is rotated around the wiper drive axis (Y-Y).
