A preserved composition suitable for topical application to mammalian skin or hair for inducing, maintaining or increasing hair growth comprises: (i) a chemical activator of protein kinase C enzymes chosen from diacylglycerols having the structure (1): <IMG> (1) where X is the same or different, and is represented by the grouping: <IMG> where x is 0, or an integer of from 1 to 28, and y is 0 or an integer of from 1 to 5; the R groups being of either stereochemical configuration with respect to the carbon backbone of the glycerol molecule, and the double bonds beings of either cis or trans configuration; and (ii) a cosmetically acceptable vehicle for the chemical activator.
