In order to ensure the safety of vehicle occupants, in particular of the front seat passenger 10, in a compact vehicle with relatively short front and rear deformation length, a device is proposed which has a large vehicle-occupant braking distance thanks to a set-back seat 4, three-point automatic seatbelt 11 with pretensioning device 16 and belt force limiter, vertically adjustable upper deflection point 20 on the backrest, a seat carrier 25 which can be displaced in an energy absorbing manner and an end wall-side foot rest 32 with an energy-absorption effect. The fixing of the seat carrier 25 may involve the use of a screw 27 and a slot 33 adapted to be widened by the screw shaft in the event of relative movement. The carrier may be connected to the rear end deformation zone 37 via a slide rod 36. The seat upholstery 22 may be supported on a deformable seat wedge 23. A section of the belt may be folded into 3 layers and connected together by means of longitudinal rupturable seams 38. The backrest 18 may be supported on a vehicle body-side rail 35 via a support element 34. The steering column 7 may be shortened in the axial direction and conceal an airbag 9. <IMAGE>
