PURPOSE: To ensure mesh between the teeth of a belt and the teeth of a pulley regardless of the moving direction of the belt and the degree of slackness of the belt. CONSTITUTION: A drive mechanism is provided with a toothed pulley 6 and a means for retaining mesh between the teeth of the pulley 6 and the teeth of a belt 2 after assembly. The retaining means is provided with a retaining member 20 positioned adjacently to a toothed section 7 of the pulley 6 defining a space therebetween allowing the belt 2 to be fitted between the retaining member 20 and the toothed section 7 of the pulley 6 when the teeth are in mesh. The space between the apex or crown of a pulley tooth and the surface of the retaining member 20 opposite thereto is smaller than the maximum thickness of the toothed belt 2. Mesh between the teeth of the belt 2 and pulley 6 is therefore ensured to provide a synchronized drive therebetween.
