An apparatus for remotely monitoring a plurality of controllable devices, particularly in hospitals. Each device (El, En) includes a control unit (32) actuated in response to a data sequence. The apparatus further includes a portable controller (10) comprising a unit for storing all or part of the control dab related to each device together with device identification data, said data sequence including device operation time data; a unit for generating time data; and a unit for comparing said operation time with the elapsed time data and for generating an alarm signal according to the result of said comparison.
