A lock (16) for, for example, an automatic teller machine is described which on locking is powered to generate or encrypt a close number which is displayed to the lock operator. The number must be reported to a central dispatch operation where it is compared with a number similarly generated using identical starting values and an identical encryption algorithm. If the two numbers are equal the central dispatch know that the lock has been locked since the close number operation is dependent upon the repowering of the lock. The lock is repowered after it has been opened by rotation of the dial (42) which extends the bolt (16) and drives a stepper motor/generator (40) to provide electrical power to the lock (16). The close number may be generated from a one use lock opening combination, a bank combination, a master combination, the lock serial number and/or the seal count. <IMAGE>
