The wheelchair (1) is propelled by the user. In addition to a frame and a seat there are two footrests (8) functionally coupled each to a drive bar (10) movable between a front and rear position parallel to the travel direction. Each drive bar is coupled to a drive wheel (2), via a drive linkage. The coupling is such that during the drive bar motion in the travel direction, ie. from rear to front, the associated drive wheel is driven forward, while simultaneously the other drive bar is retracted in an idle stroke from the front to the rear, i.e. against the travel direction. Pref. the drive wheels are interconnected by a common shaft with a crank device.
