A sliding roof which incorporates a variable number of belts (straps) fastened via their rear region to a wall and via their front region to a girder (summer) which rests on a variable number of pillars, the fastening between the pillars and the girder being achieved by means of an auxiliary piece with possibility of movement over the girder and the fastening between the girder and the belts being achieved by means of another, auxiliary piece which allows the movement of the join with respect to the girder and/or the belts. The belts define a plurality of rails on one or both sides thereof and define via the upper region means for coupling supplementary rails or a ridge. A plurality of translucent plates are mounted on the rails of the belts, the upper one being fixed and the others being movable, each one of these plates incorporating at the front and rear end a longitudinal frame which transmits the forward or backward movement of each movable plate to the plate immediately above, the lower plate receiving the movement of individual drive chains housed inside the belts over which it slides, a tensioning element acting on said chains and all said chains receiving the movement of a single shaft actuated by a drive element. <IMAGE>
