PURPOSE:To manufacture the optical waveguide which enable an optical control device and an optical fiber to easily be connected with high efficiency by increasing or decreasing the maximum refractive index of the waveguide in the propagation direction of a light wave. CONSTITUTION:The maximum refractive index of the waveguide formed by diffusing metal elements in a dielectric base 1 is continuously increased or decreased in the light wave propagation direction. Stripped metal thin films 2 which cross the propagation direction of the light wave almost at right angles or plural stripes of metal thin films 2 which are almost parallel or slightly slanted to the propagation direction of the light wave are adhered, and then the constitution elements of the respective metal thin films 2 are thermally diffused in the dielectric base 1. Thus, the pattern of the metal thin films 2 can speedily and easily be formed on the dielectric base 1, and the thermal diffusion is easy, so the conversion of spot side can be performed with high efficiency and equivalent waveguide width (standardized frequency) can be controlled. |
