The control mechanism 30 for a land-drive lawn mower 31 includes a land-drive cable 11 and a brake cable 12 controlling system 34. The cable 11 is attached to a plate 10 having a slot 13 for receiving a latch pin 14 of a manually operating actuating lever 15. In operation, the bale bar 22 is first operated to release the brake, and the actuating lever 15 is moved from its inoperative position, figures 2 and 3 (not shown), to its operative position, figure 4 (not shown), to engage the land drive. The bale bar can be partially released to progressively disengage the land-drive and at any point the bale bar can be pulled back to fully re-engage the land-drive. The user can use the bale bar to repeatedly engage and disengage or "feather" the land-drive when in confined spaces but without braking the motor. <IMAGE>
