An apparatus for applying glue to cover panels of cases comprises a glue head 1 having a troughlike member defining an adhesive receiving pocket 11 and having a forward wall comprising converging surfaces, orifices 20 in said wall located substantially on the line of convergence defined by the surfaces, means 21, 23 cooperating with the forward wall for closing the orifices at times, and means for supplying adhesive under pressure to the pocket; a backup member, means mounting the head for rocking movement towards and away from the backup member, means yieldably urging the glue head into engagement with the backup member, the forward wall being in contact therewith at the line of convergence and the orifices being substantially closed thereby, means for relatively moving a panel between the glue head and the backup member to cause a first rocking movement of the glue head to free the said orifices by the contact of a converging surface of the troughlike member with the leading edge of the panel, and a return rocking movement of the glue head upon passage of a trailing edge of the panel beyond the glue head, whereby the orifices and portions of the glue head adjacent thereto are wiped by the trailing edge during the return rocking movement. The closure means 21, 23 may comprise a flexible rubber diaphragm having projections 23 which close the orifices 20 when the diaphragm is flexed towards them. Coating apparatus including control means to ensure that adhesive is not fed from the heads when no panel is in position to receive it is described. |
