Method and apparatus for atomic absorption spectroscopy in which an absorbance signal is modulated onto a high frequency carrier (in the range from 1 KHz to 100 MHz), such that the amplitude of the modulated signal is representative of absorbance of light of a predetermined frequency by a sample. The light from source 2 is polarised by polariser 3 and magnet 8 produces a Zeeman effect in the vaporised sample 7. The modulation is effected by applying an electric field 6 to electro-optic cell 5 to rotate the plane of polarization of the light 4 passing through the cell 5. The absorbance of a sample is determined by ratioing an RF output signal 11 from the varying amplitude signal and a DC (average) output signal 12. <IMAGE>
