OCCUPANT DETECTION SYSTEM FOR FRONT PASSENGER SEAT

PURPOSE:To provide an occupant detection system for a front passenger seat capable of detecting a backward child seat and also judging the necessity of the operation of an air bag device in a broad case. CONSTITUTION:In an occupant detection system, housing an air bag in an air bag housing part 25 provided on the vehicle front of a front passenger seat 22, and judging the necessity of the operation of an air bag device 2 for the front passenger seat operating at the time of the sudden decelerating of a vehicle to expand the air bag; plural distance sensors S1 and S2 are used to detect the distances D1 and D2 to an object existing in a space from the air bag housing part 25 to the front passenger seat 22 respectively. Then the necessity of the operation of an air bag device is judged based on signals from the respective distance sensors S1 and S2.
