A novel phosphor for a radiation detector is based on a rare earth oxysulphide of formula (M1-xLnx)2O2S (I) which contains 10<-1> to 10<-6> (pref. 5 x 10<-2> to 10<-5>) mol.% Mo to reduce luminescence persistence. In (I), M = at least one of Eu, Ce, Pr, Tb, Yb, Dy, Sm, and Ho; and x = 2 x 10<-1> to 10<-6>. Also claimed are (i) a process for prodn. of a ceramic phosphor with reduced luminescence persistence; and (ii) use of Mo in 10<-1> to 10<-6> mol.% concn. as additive in a ceramic rare earth oxysulphide phosphor for reducing luminescence persistence.
