PRODUCTION OF ISOPHORONEDIAMINE

PURPOSE:To produce isophoronediamine useful as a raw material for alicyclic polyamides and coatings in high yield and purity. CONSTITUTION:This process for the production of isophoronediamine comprises the 1st step to react isophoronpnitrile with ammonia in the presence of methanol solvent to obtain a mixture of isophoroneiminonitrile and isophoronenitrile and the 2nd step to convert the mixture into the isophoronediamine by the reducing amination with a fixed bed reactor containing a hydrogenation catalyst packed in the reactor. The particle diameter of the formed hydrogenation catalyst supported on a metal is <=0.10 times the inner diameter of the reactor. This process is effective for suppressing the by-production of high-boiling binuclear compound, completely converting an intermediate unable to be separated by distillation, enabling the recovery of the product by distillation without lowering the recovery ratio of the product and operability of the process and getting the objective isophoronediamine in high yield and purity while suppressing the lowering of the catalytic activity.
