PURPOSE:To provide a semiconductor optical amplification element, which makes the amplification of light including a plurality of wavelengths possible, lessens connection loss between optically functional components, is small-sized and is low-cost, by a method wherein a plurality of directional couplers, a Y branch waveguide and an optical amplifier are integrated on the same substrate via an optical waveguide. CONSTITUTION:A semiconductor optical amplification element is constituted by integrating a directional coupler C1, which consists of a semiconductor material and divides waveguide light including a plurality of wavelengths into lights having an individual wavelength component, optical amplifiers A1 and A2, which have an amplification function to the above lights having an individual wavelength component, and a directional coupler C2, which multiplexes the amplified lights having an individual wavelength component with each other, in this order of the coupler C1, the amplifiers A1 and A2 and the coupler C2 on the same substrate via an optical waveguide. |
