Briquettes for use in foundry melting operations are composed of mechanically compacted fragments of iron or steel scrap of known analysis together with known amounts of one or more alloying additives particularly manganese, copper, nickel, molybdenum, titanium, vanadium, chromium, magnesium, silicon or phosphorus, the briquettes being such that they reach the melting zone of a cupola furnace before entire disintegration. The alloying elements may be present as scrap or as ferro-alloys, while desulphurizing and/or carburizing agents may also be present. A binder such as cement, casein, or sulphite lye may be used to form the briquette.
|
