Process for treating toxic waste, esp. ash, cinders and fly ash resulting from incineration of waste material, to render it inert, comprises (a) forming the waste into individual compact bodies by granulation, pelleting, milling, extrusion, etc. and (b) encapsulating the individual bodies in a geopolymeric coating of the poly(sialate) (-Si-O-Al-O-), poly(siloxo-sialate) (-Si-O-Al-O-Si-O-) or poly(disiloxo-sialate) (-Si-O-Al-O-Si-O-Si-O-) type having a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum MASNMR for <27>Al with a peak at 55/!5 ppm for Al(IV) and a MASNMR spectrum for <29>Si that indicates a deg. of polymerisation of type Q4, whereby the coating provides stability against acid leaching.
