PURPOSE: To selectively advance or delay the automatic start of an upshift and a downshift by a driver of a vehicle. CONSTITUTION: An upshift selecting button 226 and a downshift selecting button 228 capable of manually changing shift points/shift profiles are provided on a manually operated selector 210 for selectively increasing and decreasing the engine speed at which an upshift and a downshift are performed in an automatic shift initiation mode. Control for advancing and delaying the generation of an upshift and a downshift is made to give priority to the automatic shift initiation mode.
