PURPOSE:To provide a method and device for displaying a picture in which a improved contrast picture is displayed on a display device with a low contrast. CONSTITUTION:The display device is provided with a luminance level conversion circuit 1 converting a luminance level of a picture into a luminance level able to be displayed on a display device with a low contrast, a noise elimination filter 17 eliminating a noise of the input picture, a contrast improvement circuit 12 superimposing a waveform used to cause illusion in the luminance level onto an input picture so as to improve the contrast, and a luminance correction circuit 6b correcting the input picture so that a bright point with a high luminance due to the presence in a luminance change gets dark and conversely a dark point with a low luminance due to the presence in a luminance change gets bright, and then the picture whose contrast is improved is displayed on the display device with a low contrast.
