DATA STORAGE SYSTEM AND ITS OPERATING METHOD

PURPOSE: To constitute a variable length record along a logical track so as to successively read an optional variable length record by reading a continuous block number along an oblique direction symbol pattern crossing a direct access storage device array. CONSTITUTION: The record R1 of a variable length track 28 is provided with a data field D1, the record R2 is provided with a key field and the data field D2, the record R3 is provided with the data field D3 and the record R4 is provided with the data field D4. The set of physical tracks for constituting a cylinder 30 from four direct access storage devices forms the synchronous DASD array of N=4. Data stored in the cylinder 30 are accessed and retrieved by reading all the logical tracks along an oblique direction symbol sequence and simply following up the oblique line direction pattern while reading continuous blocks.
