The protector has a first transverse plane with stubs (8,9) having diodes (21,22) an integer number of half-wavelengths from the periphery of the waveguide and compensating stubs (11,12) lying on the perpendicular diameter. A second transverse plane lying behind the first contains stubs (13,14) in which are mounted a dissipative load. In general the guide is executed in TEII mode and the stubs with the diodes which conduct above a threshold level lie at 45 degrees to the plane of the electric field. There are three pairs of planes. Each first plane and each second plane are sepd. by an odd integer number of quarter wavelengths of the gp. wave. The first and second planes are sepd. by less than a quarter of the gp. wavelength. The stubs lengths are an odd integer number of quarter wavelengths.
