PURPOSE:To provide a high strength polyethylene fiber excellent in mechanical characteristics at the ordinary temperature and excellent in vibration and impact absorbability at cryogenic temperatures. CONSTITUTION:A high strength polyethylene fiber comprises a polyethylene consisting mainly of an ethylene component having an intrinsic viscosity [etaB] of >=5 in the fiber state, and has a strength of >=30g/d, an elastic modulus of >=900g/d, a 7' dispersion loss tangent peak value of 0.025-0.06 on the temperature dispersion measurement of the dynamic viscoelasticity of the fiber, and an alpha dispersion loss elastic modulus peak of >=85 deg.C, especially >=95 deg.C, on temperature dispersion. The fiber is obtained by the gel-spinning of superhigh mol.wt. polyethylene, and the polymer is therein deteriorated so as to satisfy a relation of [etaB]/[etaA]=0.7-0.9, preferably 0.75-0.85, between the intrinsic viscosities [etaA] and [etaB] of the polymer. The fiber is used as a reinforcing fiber for composite materials targeting use at cryogenic temperatures, especially at extremely low temperatures below -200 deg.C. |
